24 hours in Santiago, Chile

13/10/2011

Santiago, the capital of Chile, is one of the most beautiful towns in South America, and probably the most modern and cleanest one in the subcontinent. And when you have just 24 hours to know a big city, you must have to select some priorities.

Actually the purpose of being there was an assignment to a big multinational group that has offices and power plants all over South America, and the job in Santiago was to photograph the offices and some employees. After that, it was necessary to take some shots of the city to contextualize the work. The first neighborhood that was chosen was Las Condes, where the offices are located.

Las Condes is the business center of Santiago, with modern buildings, clean streets and sidewalks, and the most active commercial area of the town. It’s a very good place to take a walk and find some nice coffeehouse or restaurant, and the safest neighborhood of the city.

The next stop was in Bella Vista, a neighborhood with a very different atmosphere. This is the bohemian area of the town, with a lot of bars, restaurants, cultural centers, street art and the house where the famous poet Pablo Neruda used to live. This is a very nice place to relax and have a beer.

The last stop was in downtown, in the beautiful Plaza de Armas, the central square of the city. Unlike other big cities in South America, the traffic is not chaotic to get to there. The monuments and the old buildings surrounding the square are well preserved, and there are lots of people walking around.

Unfortunately there was only one day to explore the city, but if you go there, reserve at least one week to enjoy all the things that this beautiful town has to offer.
