São José da Ponta Grossa Fortress, Florianópolis
The Island of Santa Catarina, where most of the city of Florianópolis is located, and some near cities, have numerous fortresses that were built in the 18 th century by the Portuguese colinizers, to resist to a possible Spanish invasion.
Sao José da Ponta Grossa Fortress is one of them. After a restoration work during the 1990s, the fortress reaquired its original shape and is open to the public since then. It is a beautiful example of colonial military architecture, and has one of the greatest views of Florianópolis.
